General Liability ≠ Commercial Auto

Most truckers understand commercial auto. Far fewer realize what it leaves uncovered — and brokers and shippers require both.

🚛

Commercial Auto Liability (FMCSA)

  • Covers accidents while your truck is moving
  • Third-party bodily injury from driving
  • Third-party property damage from collision
  • MCS-90 filing — required by FMCSA
  • Does NOT cover premises or facility liability
  • Does NOT cover loading/unloading injuries
  • Does NOT cover advertising or contractual claims
🏢

General Liability (What You're Missing)

  • Premises liability — slip and fall at your facility
  • Operations — property damage during loading/unloading
  • Products & completed operations liability
  • Personal and advertising injury
  • Contractual liability for broker agreements
  • Additional insured endorsements for brokers/shippers
  • Medical payments to injured parties
Bottom line: If you only have commercial auto, you're uninsured for everything that happens off the road. Most freight broker contracts require $1M/$2M general liability with the broker as an additional insured before they assign loads. We issue that certificate same-day.

Trucking GL for Every Operation Type

🚛

Owner-Operators

Running for load boards? Most major brokers require $1M GL and a COI naming them as additional insured before assigning your first load.

🏢

Motor Carriers

Fleet under your own authority? Shipper contracts, loading dock access, and facility operations create GL exposures commercial auto doesn't cover.

📋

Freight Brokers

Brokers have direct GL exposure — property damage claims, contractual obligations to shippers, and errors in carrier matching all create non-auto liability.

🔧

Hot Shot Operators

Most major brokers require GL before adding you to their vendor lists. Same-day certificates keep you from losing loads while waiting on coverage.

Trucking GL FAQ

Yes — completely different coverages. Commercial auto covers accidents while your truck is being driven. General liability covers your business operations that aren't driving-related: premises injuries, loading/unloading incidents, advertising claims, and contractual obligations. Both are necessary for most trucking businesses — GL doesn't replace auto, it fills the gaps auto leaves.
Freight brokers are contractually responsible to shippers for damage that occurs during transportation — including loading and unloading. When a carrier damages property at a shipper's dock, that's a GL claim, not auto. Brokers protect themselves by requiring carriers to carry GL and list them as additional insured. Most broker contracts require $1M GL minimum before they'll assign loads.
Trucking GL is typically one of the more affordable coverages — most owner-operators pay $75–$200/month for $1M/$2M limits. Annual premiums generally run $900–$2,400 for single-unit operators. Fleet pricing is based on number of units, annual revenue, and operation type. The cost of losing broker assignments or paying an uninsured GL claim far exceeds the premium.
Yes — additional insured endorsements are standard. When you bind coverage, we issue a certificate naming any freight broker or shipper as additional insured same-day. For existing clients, our 24/7 COI portal handles certificate requests around the clock — no waiting on business hours.
Loading and unloading falls under general liability. While freight is being loaded or unloaded — before the vehicle moves or after it stops — incidents are GL claims. This is one of the most common uncovered losses for truckers who only carry commercial auto. GL policies specifically include operations coverage for loading/unloading activities.
It depends on your lease agreement. If you're under an exclusive lease, the carrier's GL may extend to you while dispatched. But many carriers require you to maintain your own GL, and if you haul for multiple brokers or have any independent business exposure, you need your own policy. Check your lease carefully — and call us at 844-967-5247 for a free coverage review.
